The Bald Archy Prize 2010 daily 10am-4pm
The Bald Archy prize and its controversial judge Maude, the sulphur-crested cockatoo, have been tapping into the larrikin side of the Australian sense of humour for the last 17 years. Created as a spoof of that more serious competition, the Bald Archy Prize provides artists of all styles and standards with a genuine opportunity to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature ranging from the hilarious to the bizarrely vulgar.
Winning subjects over the years have included Kerry Packer, Amanda Vanstone, Edmund Capon, Shane Warne, Dame Edna Everidge, John Howard and Pauline Hanson, Robbie and Gai Waterhouse, Rupert Murdoch, Jeff Kennett, Cardinal George Pell and Tony Abbott, and Princess Mary and Prince Frederick of Norway, as well as the 2009 winner, Bart Cummings.
For the second year running the exhibition previews in Canberra as part of the Multicultural Festival. It then moves to Sydney, where the winner will be announced, before going on tour throughout Eastern Australia.
Presented by Watson Arts Centre and Peter Batey OAM, founder and director of The Bald Archy Prize.
Watson Arts Centre, Aspinall Street, Watson.

RING A BELL FOR BEN 2010 ALL DAY
In Canberra, you will hear the bells of St Paul's Cathedral, Manuka pealing.
OCF is a successful Australian charity willing to journey to the edge of
science to find cures for childhood cancer. OCF targets those cancers with the lowest survival rate. The very nature of these cancers means cures don't come easily. To answer the challenge OCF identifies some of Australia's most progressive researchers and gives them the independence and the funds to do some of their best work. And it is delivering results.
Who is Ben?
Ben Clarke was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in late 2006. Ben was treated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He went through aggressive treatment and remained positive and strong, an inspiration to his family, friends and community. Sadly Ben passed away in early 2008. His mum, Melissa Clarke has worked hard to raise awareness and much needed funds to support OCF’s research programs that target difficult-to-treat childhood cancers such as neuroblastoma.
“Our beautiful, gorgeous son left us on Friday 25th January 2008 at 6.15pm.
Ben was so very brave and strong throughout his battle and it is ironic that his favourite games on his beloved X-Box were all battle games: Call of Duty, Spiderman, Ulimate Alliance, Battlestations – a metaphor for his own battles, which while so bravely fought were sadly unable to be won.
I miss my Ben every day, his wicked sense of humour, his inquisitiveness, his companionship and his love”.
Ben’s Mum, Melissa.

Traverse Poetry Slam 7.30pm-11.00pm
Wattle Street, Lyneham
Over the last three years, poetry slams have become a regular favourite of The Front’s monthly artistic smorgasbord.
Cosy couches and cold Coopers combine to create the perfect environment for virgin and veteran poets alike to compete for cash prizes (judged by you: the audience!).
Each Traverse Poetry Slam starts with an open mic, which gives poets a chance to warm up their voices with their own work and covers. This is followed by the main event: the slam poetry competition. Each performer has three minutes to perform a poem on any topic, in any style, providing they don’t use props or musical accompaniment.
Three judges selected from the audience judge each poem on content, delivery and audience reception. The top three poets at the end of the night win cash prizes, books and literary magazines.

This is looking to be an awesome season with the Olympic fever striking across Canberra and the surrounding region.
Ice Hockey is for all ages who have the desire and ability to learn. Convince mum and dad to let you play and even get them to play.
Hockey games are a very social affair with a strict emphasis on safety and fun. We have a bunch of new and existing coaches to teach all ages in the game of Ice Hockey.
Be at the Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre, Irving Street, Phillip. This Sunday, if you miss out contact the association to arrange to get started.
